✨ Silly Little Check-in ✨
Have you ever had one of those moments where you wish a younger version of you could see you now? I had that earlier this week.
I was sitting in the audience at an advanced screening of the The Idea of You movie hosted by Meta and Threads. Yes, this was my second time seeing the movie — it’s not every day that your favorite book gets adapted into a movie.
Suddenly I thought of my April 2020 self, the girl who was about to turn 30 and had just read The Idea of You for the first time. She was newly unemployed (thanks, pandemic!) and newly single for the first time in 8 years. She thought her life was over. That this was rock bottom.
And now here I was in April 2024, on the verge of turning 34, sitting in a fancy movie theater surrounded by influential bookpeople. I work in the book industry. I’m friendly with the author of my favorite book (!) and in awe that I was even invited to this advanced screening.
It didn’t happen overnight. And of course, there are things I’d still like to change — when is there not… But wow, I was hit with this weepy feeling. I wish I could go back and hug April 2020 Kayla and tell her things aren’t over, they’re only just beginning.
That’s my sappy little moment of the week.
What to read: Since I already recommended my favorite book The Idea of You a few weeks ago, I’m recommending one of my other favorite celebrity/ normal person romances Funny You Should Ask by Elissa Sussman. It’s excellent and vaguely based on a story about Chris Evans maybe hooking up with a journalist that was interviewing him.
What to watch: Surprise, I’m telling you to watch The Idea of You movie adaptation.
Is it as good as the book? No. And I do wish they would’ve captured more of the *essence* of the book and what makes it so special. But having now watched it again, I do think it’s an incredibly enjoyable movie and worth watching.
What to do: Do a tiny bit of spring cleaning. I know I sometimes feel overwhelmed when I want to tackle ALL the clutter in my apartment but start with something small. Maybe it’s the medicine cabinet. Maybe it’s that one shelf that has become a hot mess. Choose something small and manageable that will only take ~1 hour. Listen to a podcast, audiobook, or put on some music and make it a somewhat more fun experience.
That’s all for today. Let me know if you watch TIOY movie adaptation and share your thoughts in the comments.
Kayla

Will I regret watching the movie before reading the book? Not sure if there's anything at the end that would spoil it for me!
Planning to read the book before catching the movie—super excited for it, to say the least!
And as for wishing my younger self could see me now: if only I could travel back in time and reassure her that life gets sweeter with time. Not always obvious, but with each passing day, I'm learning, growing, and discovering more reasons to embrace the journey.
