“Wait, how old are you?”
I was checking into the American Airlines lounge at LAX before my red-eye flight back to New York City a few weeks ago. The question made me chuckle.
For a moment, this person checking me in thought I was under 21 years old, hence the age check. A whole 12 years younger than I currently am.
In my teens and 20s, it was a pretty regular occurrence to be mistaken for being younger than my age. I was told when I got older that I would take it as a compliment. Well, I guess I reached that age because damn, it did feel like a compliment. And encouragement that maybe I can stop researching places to get Botox in NYC…
This moment at the airport lounge was one of many I’ve experienced recently, in which I feel so confused as to what a 33-year-old is supposed to look, act, and feel like.
